Sunday Bible Journaling ~ A Favorite Icon of Mary, the Theotokos

This is one of my favorite icons of Mary, the Theotokos (God-Bearer).

The index page for the New Testament seemed the appropriate place to put this.  I just used the tape runner to stick it down.

You can use any number of images to add to your bible.  As long as they mean something to you and help you reflect on God, use what works for you.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ A Page Decoration Just Begun

This is a page decoration just begun with an outline of ballpoint pen.  Across the top and in the bottom corner.

It started out as a doodle.....I have to keep my hands busy while listening to things or I don't retain the information.  Probably because I am a visual learner, though way back when I was in school we didn't know that term.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Spreading the Gospel

In reading the book of the Acts of the Apostles, I saw the spreading of the gospel to far flung places as banners blowing in the wind, sometimes getting loose to travel even farther upon the wind of the Holy Spirit.

Outlined with a fine point pen and colored simply with Prismacolor colored pencils.  I used the pen to draw lines in the small ends of the banners to give the shape depth and movement.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Top of the Page Decoration

Sometimes you just want to decorate the top of the page whether it means anything or not, that's what I did here.

Soft colors from the Prismacolor colored pencils with a purple ink pen outline.  Simple but pretty for facing pages.  Sometimes less is more.

Facing Pages Decorations

Sometimes I make complimenting decorations for pages that face each other.  If you have looked through my other posts on bible journaling you will have seen this.

In this case I used more swirls for the Holy Spirit.  Acts 4 talks about Pentecost and the traditional liturgical color for Pentecost is red, like the flames of fire.

So here the swirls, or billowing clouds, are shades of pink to red.  Again outlined in ballpoint pen, this time in pink, then colored with prismacolors.

Joyful Trumpet Flowers for Gladness of Heart

These flower vines are really very simple.  A curving line for the vine, then a V shaped flower here & there.  Then add in some little leaves and define the flowers with petals and stamens.  Use whatever colors you like.

I outlined first with a light pencil, then went over those lines with a fine ballpoint pen.  Once the ink was set I erased the pencil lines.  Finally the vines, leaves & flowers were colored using prismacolor colored pencils.

The highlighted verses were colored with prismacolors also and outlined with silver metallic pen.

You can always draw LIGHTLY with pencil first, that way you can easily correct lines you don't like.

In the Last Days....

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood.....

This is my interpretation of those verses.  Drawn with a purple ballpoint pen and colored with watercolors.

The highlighted verse is colored with water also and outlined with silver metallic pen.

Don't forget to read all the verses, it is not all doom and gloom, which is why I highlighted the particular verse I did.

Powerful and Bold Colors of the Holy Spirit

The powerful coming and outpouring of the Holy Spirit.  So more swirls indicative of the movement of the Spirit.  Bold colors for the boldness of the Spirit and many colors, like a rainbow because each person is touched in a special way by the Spirit.

The swirls are outlined in purple ballpoint pen and color with prismacolor colored pencils.  The same with the highlighted verses.

Then I went over the areas with watercolor to intensify the colors.  Finally the verses were outlined in gold metallic pen.

Celtic Decoration for the Book of Acts

I love Celtic knots and other Celtic artwork and it shows up in the title of this book.  The original lettering in my NIV is very bold and modern so I kept with the black letters and added curlicues to them ending with a zoomorphic bird for the S.

The swirls are representative to me of the moving of the Holy Spirit that surely moved through all the acts of the apostles.

Black india ink was used for the title, dark pink ballpoint pen was used for the swirls and all the coloring is prismacolor colored pencils.

A Rose Drawing, Ready for Coloring

I started out cutting & pasting photos from magazines and such into my bible, I still do.
This page shows that I actually can draw things.  The rose was drawn with a purple ballpoint pen, I was in a very purple stage back then.  At some point I will color this page in, possibly with water colors.

Please ignore the pink edges, they really are the white of the page, I had to play with the color contrast to get the drawing to show up well.

Does the photo look odd next to the drawing of the rose?  Or vice versa?  Oh, well, once it is colored in perhaps it won't look so weird.  I kind of think it looks like a rose has been pressed in my bible---but without being smushed.

Don't Know What to Draw? Try Zentangles

Sometimes I wasn't sure of how to express what the words were saying.  Then I fell back on doodles, or what is now known as Zentangles.  It was a fairly mindless way to decorate the page while I was paying attention to the sermons.

As usual, I used an extra fine ballpoint pen and colored the design with prismacolor colored pencils.  I outlined the box with gold metallic pen.

Remember this was done about 25-30 years ago and the range of art supplies I could afford and what were available to me were limited.  I also worked on these in church during the hour long sermons so it had to be quiet and not messy.

If your children have trouble staying still during church, why not let them make drawings of what they hear or see, even in a blank journal.  Lots of people are like me and need something to keep their hands busy or they don't take anything into head, we're called visual learners now.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ The Light of the World

I rarely make drawings in the midst of the page.  Most of my illustrations so far have been at the top of the page and occasionally in the side margin.
This verse needed a small drawing right there beside it, a small hanging oil lamp like those used in the Orthodox Church.

Both the drawing and the verse are outlined in gold metallic pen and colored with prismacolor pencils.  This little oil lamp is actually a fairly recent addition.  Most of my post so far have been much older illustrations.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Lilies for the Ressurection

This is such a light illustration, here's an enlargement.

You can always click on the image to show it enlarged.

The lilies were sketched in black, very fine ballpoint and colored with prismacolor pencils as usual.  I used a turquoise blue for the background, keeping it light and airy, as if the lilies were dancing in the air with joy.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Red & Purple Zentangles

A good 25 years before zentangles even had a name or were a 'thing', I was creating them.

Sometimes the sermons were such that I took virtually no notes and a particular image did not come to mind.  That's when zentangles came into play.  I could draw and color quietly while still keeping my mind on what was being taught.

Outlines done in black, very fine point, ballpoint pen and colored with reds & purples in prismacolor colored pencils.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Curvy Triangles, Symbols of the Trinity

These curvy triangles are symbolic of the Trinity.

The design is outlined in gold metallic pen and colored with a range of pinks and purples.  I used prismacolor colored pencils.

I keep my pencils in a holder that allows me to arrange them in colors from light to dark, with all the pinks together, all the blues together, etc.  I find that helpful when I am shading a drawing.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Commemorating Palm Sunday

A small illustration for the triumphal entry, commemorated on Palm Sunday.
The palm fronds and leaves become ribbons and veils.

The outlines were drawn with a black, very fine ballpoint pen and were colored with prismacolor colored pencils.

Recycling an Old Bible Cover

I'm working on my bible cover makeover since my thumb is doing better.  Here's a little video I did showing the progress.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Strengthening a Weakened Page

This is the back page of the one shown in the previous post.  The most damage to the page occurred around the edge.  So I continued the theme with the washi tape and just simply added it around the edges of the page.

Simple, effective, pretty and added strength to a weakened page.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Gospel of Mark Frontispiece

facing pages

These 2 pages face each other at the beginning of Mark.  I had originally, years ago glued in a picture on the title page (the bottom photo) and decided I didn't really like it.  In trying to remove it I damaged the page pretty badly.

I covered the damaged area with a piece of scrapbook paper from Goodwill and covered the edges with some washi tape from Dollar Tree.  At some point I will create an illustration for this page with the book name.

That left the facing page had a chart I didn't find very inspiring.  So I covered it with some more of that paper and printed out an icon of St Mark.  My scan does not show it well, but his halo is colored with metallic gold pen.  It matches the gold tone in the background paper.

Just some more ideas to try and to let you know you can find art supplies nearly anywhere.

Sunday Bible Journaling ~ Blue Zentangles

There was so much drama to convey here that I could not come up with anything that would express it all.

So I chose to do a simple zentangle (about 25 years before I ever heard of one) and to color it in a monotone of all blue.

Outlined with a black ballpoint pen, no pencil lines to trace on this one, I just went for it.  Colored with every blue prismacolor colored pencil I had.

The highlighted verse is outlined in gold metallic pen and color with prismacolors.
